Sustainable Dialysis Care for Grady Patients

As of February 12, 2010, thirty-one uninsured end-stage renal disease patients in the Atlanta area face the threat of losing access to life-sustaining regular dialysis treatment.• We urge the dialysis providers of Atlanta, including outpatient clinics and hospitals, to work together to find a sustainable solution for these patients before Grady Memorial Hospital stops subsidizing their care.• We believe that all of the hospitals and dialysis clinics in Atlanta have a shared responsibility to care for these members of our community. When Grady Memorial Hospital closed its outpatient dialysis clinic, fifty-one uninsured patients were unable to find regular care elsewhere. Grady has offered to temporarily subsidize care for these patients at private facilities, but unless a long-term solution is found these patients will be forced to seek care through emergency departments, where they will receive a lower standard of care without sufficient continuity. As health professional students, we call on Atlanta area dialysis providers to find a sustainable solution for these patients and we believe Emory Healthcare should be a leader in uniting Atlanta area dialysis centers in finding a sustainable solution for these patients.
